Never Enough

BY STEVE MARRIOTT

This series of paintings are based around the idea of shop front mannequins and what life they might secretly have beyond their role as objects for the display of consumerist goods.  Mannequins are meant to draw our attention and yet they aren’t meant to be the subject of our attention.  They are seen but not seen at the same time.

Steve Marriott wanted to explore the ‘what if’ idea that mannequins, without movement or speech, human-like but not human, were somehow alive and had something to say.  What comments would they make?  What messages would they send and would the messages be for everyone or the flesh and blood individual that could see or hear it at just the right moment?

Through the use of colour and (sometimes) text, Marriott wanted to give these inanimate objects a life beyond their status, to hear what they might say, if they had a chance to say it.
