Kandakas: Pearls & Lotuses of The Nile

The Humble Gallery presents Kandakas: Pearls & Lotuses of The Nile, an exhibition of paintings by Ahmed Jabir.

Kandakas: Pearls & Lotuses of The Nile is a collection of sensitively worked and well crafted artworks emerging from a heritage rooted in ancient African traditions including the cultural practices of Islam. A scholar and academic, Jabir’s visual and literary practice reflect his extensive knowledge of the history and civilisations of Sudan and its neighbours dating back to the grandeur of Kush rule. The works on display are a testament to these key intellectual engagements, equally paying tribute to the history of the ancient Sudanese women--Nubian queens such as Shanakathete, Amanirenas and Amanishakhe as well as the contributions made by women to the present-day struggle for voice and freedom in Sudan”. Professor Paul Dash

Background music at the exhibition is by Sudanese jazz musicians of the 1970’s and 1980’s: Kamal Kelia, The Scorpions & Saif Abu Bakr plus two tracks by legendary multi-instrumental musician, and human rights activist Fela Kuti.

The exhibition opened on Friday 4th October 2019 and included a performance by dancer Fanta Faustino Roro and opening remarks by Professor Paul Dash.
